Sam Abell is a photographer best known for his work with National Geographic. His work is often considered some of the more artistic published by the magazine (which he began shooting for in 1967).

Abell primarily shoots a documentary style, but chooses to create images that also stand open to artistic interpretation. He rarely shoots with flash, instead choosing to work with available lighting. His career began with inspiration from his father (a geography teacher who also ran a photo club) and mother a teacher.

Let’s hear from the man himself as he shares his inspirations and advice.
