He has been named the 2014 SATW Travel Photographer of the Year. Usually these award recipients are talents that photograph for prestigious publications like National Geographic. But this artist set himself apart from some of the best travel photographers in the world. How? He was the first blogger to win this award, his work has never appeared in print, he is self taught and he’s never read a book in the subject of photography. So today, we stand and applaud travel photographer, Gary Arndt.

Gary’s Favorite Gear:
“My favorite gear is a Nikon D300s and an 18-200mm VR lens. With that combo I’m able to travel around with world with very little weight and be able to shoot most things. I also carry a 12-24mm lens and a 50mm f/1.4. I occasionally will rent larger lenses if I’m shooting wildlife.”
“My advice is to be brutally honest with yourself. People tend to be satisfied with their images because they are their images. Always be looking for ways to improve and never be satisfied. My photography education has been one long iterative process of improving my photos and finding new ways to take better images.”
