Photofocus Episode 55

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & special guest Tamara Lackey (www.tamaralackeyblog.com or www.twitter.com/tamaralackey)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode Number 55 of Photofocus with Scott Bourne and special guest Tamara Lackey. Photofocus is the show devoted to your questions about anything photography related including gear, technique, locations, etc. Your questions will shape the direction of this show so be sure to send your questions to [email protected]. We will try to answer as many as we can but we get a lot of questions so we’ll try to take a collection of questions that represent a particular topic and present them together.

This week we kick things off with a question about smiling in portraits:

Question One – Smiling in Portraits

David Sousa writes: When you make a portrait, is it mandatory (or important) that the subject always smile? Lots of rock band portraits, sports stars portraits etc don’t contain a smile. Is that okay?

Tamara: I think that’s perfectly fine. Part of creating a portrait is capturing who they are as a person and you don’t see everyone running around all day smiling. It’s good to have some variety in your portraits and different expressions to bring life to your subject.

Scott: My only concern with non-smiling portraits is when people don’t smile because they think they’ll look cool. Continue reading

This week we are talking about flash photography.

Question One – Lighting Recommendations

@arielko can you recommend any strobes, ring flashes, power packs? but not as expensive as Profoto, broncolor. Is White Lighting good?

Rick: I’m a Canon explorer of light and as far as ring flashes I’ve only tried the MR 14EX and the Macro Twin Lite 24 EX. I like the less expensive 14EX for 2 reasons. It’s easier to use and it gives off a nice diffuse type of lighting.

Scott: I use Elinchrom which is unfortunately very expensive but most of my friends on a budget rave about Alien Bees. Alien Bees also offers a ring flash but the Ray Flash adapter will work with any flash and turn it into a ring flash. When it comes to lighting equipment you do tend to get what you pay for. If you’re going to be hauling it around, the cheaper stuff doesn’t tend to fair so well.

Rick: Another option is Westcott makes the Apollo and the mini-Apollo. You can put any type of flash in them and trigger them with something like a PocketWizard. Continue reading

Kicking it off this week is a question about the Vault in Aperture.

Question One – Aperture Vault

@dkalmbach: is there any need to use the Vault in Aperture if I regularly back up my Mac with Superduper? Do I need to 2 mirrors?

Scott: I do use the vault because it’s specifically designed to work with Aperture. Superduper is going to backup the whole file whereas the vault is only going to backup the vault and the changes to the photos. Nothing wrong with using both. Make sure that you have one that you can take on the road with you. Continue reading

NOTE: Rick Sammon – A Canon Explorer of Light apparently didn’t know that Canon doesn’t make a 24-105mm F/2.8 lens and mistakenly referred to such a lens during the show. It is actually an F/4 lens and we regret Rick’s error.

We will try to answer as many as we can but we get a lot of questions so we’ll try to take a collection of questions that represent a particular topic and present them together. Kicking it off this week is a question about legal issues related to selling photos taken in tourist areas.

Question One – Legal Issues when Selling Photos of Tourist Areas

Our first question comes from johnvanderbag on Twitter who asks “What legal issues are involved with selling shots taken in tourist areas such Disneyland or Universal Studios?

Rick: You can take all the photos you want but you can’t sell them without a release. If you are going to photograph public building like the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame you need a property release otherwise it’s an endorsement of that place for the product.

Scott: If you are doing it for editorial purposes you generally don’t need a release. If it is going to be used in an ad then you’ll need a release. You also have to make sure that you’re taking it from public property. The easiest thing is to get a release for everything and always consult with your lawyer. Continue reading

For Immediate Release

The recent upsurge in the popularity of photography has led to lots of new photographers with questions. They want to know how to get the most out of their cameras and lenses. They want to know what sort of gear they really need. They want to know how they can learn more about the art and craft of storytelling through photography. Professional photographers Rick Sammon and Scott Bourne have created a radio-style show called “Photofocus” to answer these questions.

“I really learned a great deal about what the audience wants from some of the other tech-related podcasts I’ve been involved with,” said show host Scott Bourne. “This time, I’m taking everything I’ve learned from the other shows and melting that down into what I hope will be an experience that everyone enjoys. I’m also very grateful to have the help of an industry veteran like Rick Sammon.”

The podcast is available free of charge at http://www.photofocus.com, on iTunes (Link opens iTunes App) or as a traditional MP3 RSS feed at http://photofocus.podbean.com/feed/.

The show publishes on the 5th, 15th and 25th of each month. Each show is approximately 40 minutes long and is chocked full of answers to photography questions that the hosts receive via email and over Twitter. Continue reading
