Hopefully you’re aware of our Emerging Photographer of the Year Award – to recap, over the next year, we’re going to identify 24 photographers who have outstanding work and offer them the exposure that they can get through our Photofocus website. Then, we’re going to select one to give a special award to. (You can still enter the contest. Read the rules linked to above.)

I’m proud to announce our 22nd finalist. Levet, Christophe (aka Chris) is a portrait photographer from Grenoble, France.

It’s easy to get into a rut when making portraits. It’s hard to come up with something fresh. It’s even harder to do that and maintain a definable style. Chris has no problem with either. His portrait work is beautiful, edgy and very fresh. His use of light is masterful. His subjects have great expressions – which is the real secret to a great portrait. He calls these Nouveaux Portraits and I really like them.

I’m proud to announce our 19th finalist. Casey Lessard is a newspaper photographer from Parkhill, Ontario, Canada.

It’s easy to look at newspaper photography as mundane and routine. But Casey shows that newspaper photojournalism doesn’t have to be boring. Casey’s images are whimsical and are a great example of good photojournalism.

I’m proud to announce our 20th finalist. Luis Argerich is a landscape photographer from Argentina.

Arresting, inspiring and beautiful are the three best adjectives that I can come up with to describe Luis’ work. His understanding of, pursuit of, and use of light in the landscape is amazing. His vision goes beyond the normal pretty picture to something special.

I’m proud to announce our 19th finalist. Chris Martin is a travel photographer from Alberta, Canada. His gallery
“our world: people of myanmar” is very well thought out and the images are publication-quality. His use of lines and iteration in his composition is what caught my attention. Add to that a definite sense of style, great use of color and images with lots of pop and you have what it takes to be a finalist in our EPY competition.
