This week we are featuring a different kind of photographer… one who embraces the captured moments as well as putting time to a visual experience. Mayeul Akpovi is a self-described urban photographer, but also mixes in some truly incredible time lapse work. “My style is urban photography with timelapse and hyperlapse technology. My photographs build a visual memory and allow me to express myself in a way I could not do otherwise.” Mayeul’s “Paris in Motion” series of videos is so impressive that two of the four parts were graced with the coveted Vimeo Staff Pick badge.

“It all began in 2010 when I moved from Paris to Besançon (a small town in the eastern part of France). Coming from my home country Benin and after 4 years in Paris, I didn’t even have one visual souvenir from the french capital. I thus decided to make photography my hobby and bought my first numeric reflex camera (a Pentax K5 with various lenses).”

Mayeul doesn’t necessarily see what he is doing as a job or even as fine art. It’s just what he does to express himself, and for him that’s enough. “I would describe it as a personal approach using media and techniques of our time that fit my expectations. It is neither art nor a job, but the desire to express myself through something very visual.

“It is actually very tempting for me to turn professional, but I would first of all like to achieve a ‘photographic Tour de France.’ I am open to all interesting and exciting projects.”

Mayeul’s Advice to Emerging Photographers

“First of all, you shouldn’t withdraw onto oneself, but open yourself to other photographers. You can contact them directly or follow them on social networks.”

“Engage yourself into personal and rewarding projects. Be constantly on the outlook for new ideas.”

“With photography as with any other endeavor the saying holds true: ‘believing in your project is already half the success. The other half is hard work.'”
