Editor’s Note: Each week we’ll be featuring members of the Photofocus community.  Part of our New Year’s resolution is to focus on new and emerging talent.  As such, Melissa Niu will personally select images from our readers and feature them here on Photofocus.

I am a self-taught amateur photographer based in Thessaloniki, Greece. Capturing moments is something that has always fascinated me. Until recently my photography was focused mainly in landscapes and everyday life. Then I was introduced to the magical world of conceptual photography and I felt butterflies in my stomach. I knew that this was the kind of photography that I wanted to do from now on. I decided I wanted to change my style, so I can express my emotions and my thoughts through my photography, hoping to provoke emotions and thoughts to others as well.

I have decided to use myself as a model, creating a series of conceptual self-portraits. This picture is one my first conceptual portraits. It was shot with window light and it is a composited image. I like using several textures on my pictures depending on the theme. Here I used the stormy clouds and a rough wall texture (all shot by me) to emphasize the picture’s emotion. The hair motion further emphasizes the inner anguish. I chose not to show the face, because I want the viewer to focus on the general feeling of the picture.
