My Five Favorite Photo Information Blogs/Websites – Mini Review

February 13, 2011

Featured in Alltop

I spend so much time writing for, editing and publishing Photofocus.com that I don’t get to spend as much time as I’d like reading other photo-related sites. But I do try to get around the web every chance I get to find inspiration. There are tons of great photo-related sites out there. I read lots of them. I tend to pick the ones that offer wide variety because at this stage of my photo career, I know variety is important. If I had to pick five favorites, these are the sites I’d probably select – in no particular order.

1. ScottKelby – http://www.ScottKelby.com

Scott is a great guy who’s done more for photo education than just about anyone I know. His personal site offers just the right mix of inspiration, information, news and how-to. He features lots of well-known and respected guest bloggers covering a wide variety of topics that will be of interest to many. What you see is what you get. Scott Kelby is as he appears on his site. Knowledgeable and fun. It’s a must-read for me.

2. Luminous-Landscape – http://www.luminous-landscape.com/

This site will thrill you if you are into the technical aspects of photography. It also has a strong nature photography backbone. Michael Reichmann is a very serious and talented photographer who leans a bit to the fine art/technical side. It’s an odd combination. Usually one finds either/or. In Michael’s case you get both. Michael works with lots of high-end gear and does videos as well as a blog-style site.

3. PIXIQ – http://www.pixiq.com/

I found this site because Photofocus contributor Joe Farace blogs there. I have to admit that I don’t know all of the contributors. The ones I do know run the spectrum from okay to great. (Joe is on the great side.) There are a few contributors to this site I flat out ignore, but on balance, there’s enough good and reliable information at PIXIQ to cause me to visit regularly. It’s strength is in the variety and different points of view it offers.

4. CreativeLive – http://www.creativelive.com

If you want a free photo education and your schedule is flexible, this is the site for you. Chase Jarvis is a co-founder in this project and offers streaming video every week free of charge. If you want to own the video for later reference or simply can’t make the time slot where the free video runs, you can buy (at affordable prices) your own downloadable copy of the videos covering everything from Aperture 3 (that was me) to lighting, posing, weddings, Photoshop and in between. It’s an amazing site full of great info.

5. Alltop – http://photography.alltop.com/

Not really a blog per se but rather an aggrigator of blogs. Virtually every top photography site appears on this page. Guy Kawasaki used to do a little better job of curating this site. Now he pretty much lets anyone on. But I am proud that Photofocus is still relatively high-up on the list. We get lots of traffic from Alltop so I know many of you read it already. If you don’t, this is a good place to start everyday to see what folks are talking about. Just remember that you need to spend time vetting each of the sites represented at Alltop and make your own decision as to their validity.
