After I gave my talk at Photo Plus Expo last Saturday, I sat in on my friend Bambi Cantrell’s posing class. Bambi is one of the best in the business at posing. She studies magazines, fashion shows, store displays and anything else she can to see how women are presented visually. During her class she presented her tried and true tips, some of which I’ll share with you now. NOTE: While these tips are primarily aimed at posing women, some of them will work with men too.

1. Make sure to keep the arms away from the body.

2. Pose the subject with all of their weight on their back foot.

3. Have the subject place one foot in front of the other the way a model walks down a catwalk.

4. If the subject is seated, make sure she is sitting on the edge of the seat, not back on her thighs.

5. If the subject is laying down, roll her onto her side so she is directly facing the camera and place one knee crossing the other.

All five of these tips have two things in common. They are flattering to almost anyone and they are slimming. Give them a try.

P.S. I am helping Bambi run her Focus on Fabulous boudoir workshop again next year in Vegas right after WPPI. If you’re interested read all about it on our Workshop page.
