Short and Sweet Shooting Tip #4 – Capture the Peak of Action

Photograph an animal (or a sports player) standing still, and you will probably get a pretty boring picture. Photograph an animal (or a sport player) at the peak of action, and you have a much more compelling shot.

Keys to capturing the peak of action: Anticipate the moment. Set your camera on rapid frame advance. Set a shutter speed of at least 1/500th of a second. Make sure the subject will be in focus when it moves. Watch the background. Compose your picture so that when the subject moves, you don’t cut off any part of the animal. (Both of these pictures are cropped.) Final tip: Hope the subject moves. :-)
