Gifts for Photographers

December 6, 2008
tags:

Okay – it’s that time. We want to publish a list of suggested holiday gifts that cost approximately $500 or less.

Here’s my list…

1) Drobo – no brainer – nothing you could do for the photographer you love would be better than helping them protect their data.

2) Gura Gear Kiboko Bag – a stunning new bag that will carry your gear nearly anywhere. Extremely well made.

3) Nik Silver Efex Pro – one of the most incredible pieces of photo software ever made – changed the way I photograph.

    Here’s my list.

    1) High-end AA rechargeables and a good charging station that can identify a bad battery.

    2) $500 Gift card for B&H hidden in one of their monstrous catalogs to give the gift some heft.

    3) If married/coupled/paired then a bunch of I need to work cards good when the photographer needs/wants to work instead of going to the opera. Also a couple “I need a back/shoulder rub” coupons would be appreciated.

    - Breeze Systems Downloader Pro software. I know you can import in aperture or lightroom, but downloader pro is my favorite. So much more configurable. The only non Lightroom/Photoshop workflow I have.
    - I second a flash (a higher end one, SB800/900 or 580EX)

1). Memory Cards. You can never have enough of them. I would go for 8GB as the new round of dlsrs are stuffed with pixels.
2). Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead because its the best ballhead made. You’ve got to try one to appreciate the craftsmanship.
    3). 50mm f/1.4. Enough said.

This is just a great lens for the money. Canon 50mm f1.8. No frills, but gives excellent results and fast shutter speeds. If you or your intended gift recipient does not have one, it is a no brainer for less than £70.

Spyder3 Elite (about $200 at US Amazon etc) – for color calibration of your monitor(s). If you do your own printing for clients or just want to make sure that the printed color looks right for your own satisfaction, you can step up to Spyder3 Studio (adds printer calibration) for under $500 at US Amazon.

Finally, for an nice coffee table book which is also a great read about “the geography of color” — Colors of the World by Jean-Phillipe and Dominique Lenclos (US Amazon). They also did an earlier Couleurs de l’Europe, Geographie de la couleur, which is a more detailed treatment of the “geography of color” throughout Europe. It is in French but I enjoyed the photos! ;-)

Ok Aperture is gotta be one!
Flash or if you’ve got a flash either a lightsphere or a system for off camera flash (wireless or a cord and a nice bracket) – that’s only 2. I don’t care it you think it’s more than one cuz here’s my third: :D
yeah the gift card it says: I know you’re picky and I want you to be happy.
Besides, number 3 covers and LX3, memory cards, batteries, a cool bag, the tripod, the 50 f1.4 or the teleconverter or a lens baby. – that’s the explanation of my third gift. :)

A lighted sensor Loupe would sure be nice to see what is really on that peice of plastic. The third and final is the obligitory gift card from a reputable camera supply store that carries (in stock) what you really want. Merry Christmas Everyone! Burn those pixels!!!
