Free Maperture Plug-in

Ubermind has released a new (free) plug-in for Apple Aperture called Maperture.

According to the company, it combines the power of Aperture and Google Maps and makes geotagging your photos a snap.

Feature List
Add or update global positioning system (GPS) data to your digital photos
Scales from a few images to your entire library
Elegant, responsive user-interface
Location aware photos, just a few clicks away

I tried it and it is very easy to use.

  1. Got this last night and really like it. I use a geo device on my Nikon (di-GPS Pro) and it is a great way to see all your locations within Aperture. Once in a while the photo is not tagged and it is easy to put the tag on. Also I believe it is FREE.

  3. I’m looking for a cheap solution for Canon DSLR’s. Any suggestions? I’m ok if it’s not attached to the camera body and uses AA battery, just want one that has a good GPS signal and easy MAC integration. I saw some reviews at B&H and several of the ones available have terrible signal reception….

  5. I haven’t used this program, but lately I have been getting a lot of questions about the locations of my landscape photos, so I have started adding them to the map on Flickr. After up-loading, you can click on “add to the map” and place it exactly where you took it. I am not sure if Flickr supports actual geo-tags, but it would be helpful if cameras start making them built-in.

  7. Is this also working with the iPhone (3g) used as a tagging device (not as camera of course:-)?

  11. @leif, I have tried using 1 Lightroom Geotagging plugin (search Google) worked in 1.0 and seems to load fine in version 2. Although I haven’t tried it yet. You do need a gpx file though.
@Fernando – I use a Garmin handheld (hiking) unit. The basic ones are about 100.00 or less. I got one with Geocaching abilities, and just download the tracks to my PC or Mac. Unfortunately the Garmin software is not available for Mac, you can use gpsbabel or other programs. I use the Garmin software in Windows and VMWare fusion as it allows track editing.

  13. Does anyone know of a similar plugin for iPhoto?

  15. Maperture works great, but it removes all IPTC tags from my pictures (D70/D80 NEF files). So I have to geotag before I do all other tagging.

  17. Time-synch geotagging of images is a good general purpose way to get coordinates for EXIF data stuffing.
The date and time of GPS unit are synced with the camera for later merging location with picture.
The challenge for Mac owners is to find software that will automate the inserting process.

What is the input format of Maperture, assuming I use Aperture (which I do)?
Were there other Mac packages that work independently or with iPhoto?
Lastly, I’m considering the PharosGPS PTP10 unit … any opinions?

    Thanks in advance for insight!

  19. Re: Does anyone know of a similar plugin for iPhoto?

Currently, iPhoto does not support “Edit” plugins like Aperture does (only “Export” plugins).
So…while it could be done, the process/workflow would not exactly be user-friendly.

    Maybe in a future release (I hope!)…
